Harold W. Root was born on March 23, 1919 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Root who lived in Valley Township located in Chester County. Harold moved to California and enlisted in the Army on July 11, 1940 at Fort McDowell, on Angel Island.

Harold was sent to the Philippines and served with the 31st Infantry Regiment. He rose to the rank of Corporal.

Corporal Harold W. Root was Killed In Action October 15, 1942. He is buried at the Manila American Cemetery at Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines.
